This is a very mild but very hearty and nourishing soup with big chunks of ham and whole mushy peas.
Deluxe Chunky Split Pea And Ham Soup
1-2 Bone-In Ham Steak(s) (depends on how many people are eating)
6 cups Water
Bag Split Peas
1/2 cup Diced Celery
1 Diced Onion
1 clove garlic pressed
5 leaves fresh Mint
2-3 T butter
1 t Salt and 1 t Pepper
Hot Sauce to serve
1 box Bachelor Mushy Peas, cooked (keep them whole)
Saute the onion, celery and garlic in the butter in the Instant Pot on saute with no lid. Season with Salt and Pepper, When tender put the Ham in the Instant Pot and cover with water, Pressure cook at Meat, 1 hour, seal. When done, remove the ham to a plate and clean it up and break it into chunks.
Meanwhile, add the bag of peas to the ham broth left in the Instant Pot, and let cook till they get mushy.
Add the ham, stir, adjust seasonings.
To serve, top with half cup Mushy Peas
Serve with garlic bread and splashes of Sherry Vinegar and Hot sauce
Note: you can buy canned Mushy Peas, but I hate those, I like the dry box
